The advantages of outsourcing on mental health and wellbeing

The advantages of outsourcing for small and large businesses are many, and are recognised by some of the biggest and most successful organisations in the world.

In my opinion, the true value in outsourcing lies in the potential for reducing overwhelm, increasing your confidence as a business owner, and the impact that a greater sense of wellbeing will have on your income and happiness as an entrepreneur.

This is particularly true of those delivering health and wellbeing services to their clients. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So what if, instead of viewing outsourcing as purely a business decision, we started to see it as an act of radical self care?

Essential self care for entrepreneurs

Self care is a term that’s been bandied about a lot recently. Over time, it seems to have lost its true meaning and instead become associated with bubble bath and face packs.

But self care isn’t always about taking time out. Sometimes it’s about putting in a little bit of extra effort now to make your life easier a bit later on - for example, working a bit late to schedule your social media posts for the week so that you can put your full attention on your discovery calls over the following few days.

In its truest form, self care is about making sure you have the tools and energy needed to take on daily life. When you’re running your business, this might be quite different from the sort of self care needed for someone who is employed.

Reframe cost versus worth

So if self care is so essential for running a successful business, why aren’t we all doing more to look after ourselves as individuals?

Well, for entrepreneurs, cost is often at the top of our list of concerns whenever we’re considering which services we need. There’s only a certain amount in the bank, so return on investment is key.

Thing is, by clinging so tightly onto everything for fear of spending too much money, you begin to underestimate the value of your time.

If you continue to shoulder the burden for every task, you’ll find that you spend more and more time on jobs that are worth less, in terms of an hourly rate, than the service you deliver. So by continuing to perform tasks that could be outsourced, you’re actually losing money from your business.

Instead, by investing in outsourcing those tasks, you can not only spend more time on your income-generating tasks, but you’re also telling yourself “my time is valuable, and worth investing in”.

It might sound like a small thing, but mindset can make or break a business owner’s journey. By recognising the psychological costs of trying to do everything yourself, you can reframe financial costs and take a huge step forward in taking care of yourself and, by extension, your business.

Reclaim your headspace

It’s more than just your time that gets eaten up by doing everything yourself though. Headspace is arguably an even more precious resource that we only have so much of in a day.

Running a business means taking on all sorts of roles and responsibilities, not just the thing you offer your clients. You’ll also need to consider your finances, sales process, marketing, website design, to name just a few.

And each one of these tasks eats into the amount of headspace you have to offer that income-generating, soul-replenishing work that gets you out of bed in the morning.

If you’ve spent the morning trying to write a blog that just didn’t feel like it was good enough, no matter how many times you rewrote it, by the time you turn your attention to your client work, you’re already feeling stressed and overwhelmed.

See how easily those feelings could bleed into each area of your business?

This is another area where outsourcing can be so beneficial. Partnering up with someone you trust to complete the tasks to a high standard means you can protect yourself from the kind of stress that makes running a business overwhelming for so many.

By lifting that burden off your shoulders, you’re also free to spend your time where you can make the biggest difference to your clients and your business. No more stress, no more distractions, just focused, intentional work.
